What is a Swedish Massage?

Swedish massage is one of the most common types of massage therapy.

There are five basic strokes used throughout a Swedish massage:

  1. Effleurage (long, gliding strokes)

  2. Petrissage (kneading the muscles)

  3. Friction (circular rubbing motions)

  4. Tapotement (fast tapping)

  5. Vibration (rapidly shaking specific muscles)

These strokes are combined with gentle stretching and movement of the joints. The Swedish massage technique promotes relaxation by releasing muscle tension. This type of massage can be especially helpful for people who hold tension in their:

  • Lower back

  • Shoulders

  • Neck
